After the war, many rubber estates were substituted with oil palm. More lowland forests were cleared for oil palm in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak in the 1970s. Owls, woodpeckers, doves, magpie robin and tailorbirds are some of the common species found in these areas

In Langkawi we were set upon by a pair of ferocious lapwings that we hadn’t noticed nesting nearby. One whizzed past me while the other turned on my husband in what appeared to be coordinated strikes.The fright remains in me to this day. But it did not stop us from resuming birding.
